Los Angeles County Superior Court Updates:
Judicial Changes
The following are recent judicial changes for the Superior Court Judges:
- Judges Bensigner, Currey, Dhanidina, Hall, Kim, Mohr, Raphael and Sortino are currently sitting on assignment at the Court of Appeal. Assigned Judge Kallin is in Department 51 (Mosk) and Judge Leiter is in Department B (Compton).
- Judge Bendix will be sitting at the Court of Appeal beginning January 1, 2018.
- Judge Burdge will be moving to a civil courtroom in Alhambra effective January 2, 2018.
- Judge Lu is now sitting in Department 77 (Mosk).

United States District Court for the Central District of California Updates:
Amendment of Local Civil Rule 77-1 for Emergency Matters Effective
As summarized in the our prior Court Alert, amended Local Civil Rule 77-1 (“Procedures for Emergency Matters) became effective on December 1, 2017. The amendment added the following language to Local Civil Rule 77-1:
In highly unusual circumstances, a filer may not be able to anticipate before the close of business that relief will need to be sough prior to the next business day in a new civil case not already assigned to a judge. If a new civil case is opened and an application for a TRO or similar document is filed after 4:30 p.m., and court attention is needed prior to the next business day, the filer should call the Court at 213-894-0028 and follow the Emergency Filing Procedures set forth on the Court's website at http://www.cacd.uscourts.gov/court-procedures/filing-procedures/emergency-filing-procedures. Requests for emergency relief directed to this number should be exceedingly rare.

2018 Bench Meets the Bar Luncheon
Please join us for the Litigation Section’s 2018 Bench Meets the Bar luncheon, which will gather many prominent judges and lawyers from the Los Angeles legal community in a unique and collegial atmosphere to meet and discuss the state of the courts. The event will take place on February 6, 2018 from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm at the Biltmore Hotel, 506 S. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90071. There will be presentations by Presiding Judge Daniel J. Buckley of the Los Angeles County Superior Court and Chief District Judge Virginia Phillips of the United States District Court for the Central District of California.

UCLA Mock Trial Program - Volunteer Judges Needed
UCLA’s Undergraduate Mock Trial Program is seeking volunteer judges and attorneys to serve as Presiding Judges or Scoring Judges for two Los Angeles area collegiate mock trial tournaments: (1) The 2018 UCLASSIC Mock Trial Tournament on January 13-15, 2018 (at UCLA), and (2) The 2018 Opening Round of the National Championship on March 10-11, 2018 (at the Santa Monica Courthouse).
