This month, CFJ celebrates the work of project volunteers during a cocktail reception and awards ceremony. On October 20, attorneys and law firms will be honored for their pro bono work within CFJ’s four legal services projects, and two members will receive the CFJ President Award. Meet our honorees and register for the event. 

Meet this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month honorees, who are being featured on LACBA’s website and social media accounts through mid-October.

LACBA’s latest annual report is now available online. The report covers the July 2021-June 2022 bar year and includes leadership messages, department data, CFJ info, and more.

Together with the California Attorney General’s Office, the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office, and WLALA, LACBA and SoCal LARJ are assembling a coalition of law firms and lawyers who are willing to provide pro bono legal support to patients, providers, and others in Southern California—and beyond—who are affected by the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision.

LACBA's President's Advisory Committee on Women in the Legal Profession is seeking Elizabeth L. Kenney Women Lawyers of Achievement Award nominations by September 23, 2022.

LACBA recently unveiled a new, dynamic website with added features designed to enhance the member experience, including an easy-to-use portal. LACBA’s new and improved website, which will simplify enrollment, provide easy section and event registration, and facilitate more seamless member-to-member communication, launched on August 30, 2022. 

“After a thorough review and with the endorsement of over 75 other bar associations across the country, we committed to Member Central, a platform that integrates LACBA’s extensive database with a new, state-of-the-art website,” explains Stan Bissey, LACBA Executive Director and CEO. “Ultimately, this change will increase efficiency while also improving the overall member experience.”

What happens if the lawyer fails to notify the client either at the outset of the representation, or subsequently during the representation, that the lawyer does not have liability insurance?

Rule 1.4.2(a) of the California Rules of Professional Conduct provides that a “lawyer who knows or reasonably should know that the lawyer does not have professional liability insurance shall inform a client in writing, at the time of the client’s engagement of the lawyer, that the lawyer does not have professional liability insurance.

Thanks to Littler Mendelson, P.C., and Matern Law Group, P.C., Counsel for Justice received a $48,690 cy pres award to support its legal services projects. The award resulted from the settlement in a class action case.

Cy pres awards have had a meaningful impact on funding the important work of the legal services projects. In past years, CFJ has received substantial cy pres awards for its Domestic Violence Legal Services Project and Veterans Legal Services Project.
