In her final message as LACBA President, Sarvenaz Bahar renews her urgent call for attorneys to join panels serving indigent appeals, highlighting the critical backlog and the need for competent representation to ensure justice. She encourages members to get involved, outlining the personal and professional benefits, and thanks the community for the privilege of serving.

LACBA’s sold-out Installation and Awards Dinner was held on June 20. Among the speakers were outgoing President Sarvenaz Bahar, Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero of California, and President-Elect Jeffrey B. Margulies. Additionally, eight individuals were honored with awards.

Over five months after the January wildfires, the need for pro bono legal assistance remains urgent. Read how you can volunteer your time and expertise to support impacted communities. 

Last month, members explored South Africa, gaining insights into its legal system, cultural heritage, and natural beauty. The tour was part of LACBA’s International Travel program.

On April 25, LACBA held a day-long Diversity and Inclusion Conference. The sold out event focused on fostering inclusion and celebrating diversity within the legal community while creating a platform for discussion, collaboration, and networking.

The use of threats by lawyers is a common negotiation technique, but a threat that amounts to extortion (or blackmail) is a crime. It is, thus, important for lawyers to be aware of the distinction between lawful and unlawful threats so that their negotiating tactics do not cause them to engage in conduct that subjects them to criminal or civil liability.

LACBA member Justice Helen Zukin has been nominated by Governor Gavin Newsom to serve as Presiding Justice of the California Court of Appeal, Second District, Division Four.
