The use of threats by lawyers is a common negotiation technique, but a threat that amounts to extortion (or blackmail) is a crime. It is, thus, important for lawyers to be aware of the distinction between lawful and unlawful threats so that their negotiating tactics do not cause them to engage in conduct that subjects them to criminal or civil liability.
