CFJ's Vision
LACBA Counsel for Justice envisions a Los Angeles where everyone has access to the legal support they need, fostering a community built on equality, fairness, and opportunity for all.
CFJ's Mission
CFJ promotes access to justice for those in underserved communities seeking to assert their legal rights. Our pro bono-based projects bridge the justice gap for those in underserved communities seeking safety, stability, and justice. CFJ engages volunteer attorneys to provide direct legal services, empowering people with the knowledge and support they need to effectively navigate their legal challenges.
CFJ's Work
With the support of LACBA and our many volunteers, CFJ helps thousands of individuals and families access their legal rights each year. CFJ's three legal services projects are dedicated to offering direct legal assistance to survivors of domestic violence, immigrants, and U.S. military veterans.
Counsel for Justice honors the memory of Linda Mackey Stude, whose dedication and leadership helped shape the foundation of our organization.

Linda served as Administrator of the Los Angeles County Bar Foundation from 1987 until her retirement in 2009, offering unwavering support, historical knowledge, and guidance during the Foundation’s transition to what is now Counsel for Justice. She was known as a force of nature: passionate, meticulous, and deeply committed to the cause of expanding access to justice.
Those who had the privilege of working with Linda remember her as “our rock” and credit her tireless efforts with laying the groundwork for much of the pro bono work CFJ carries forward today.
Linda’s legacy lives on in every life touched by the services she helped make possible. We are grateful for her service, her spirit, and her lasting impact on the legal community and beyond.
Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and all those who were fortunate to know her.
Veterans Legal Services Project
Record Clearing Program
LACBA Counsel for Justice’s Veterans Project would like to thank our sponsors for their continued commitment to the provision of free legal aid to the veteran community. Our sponsors not only provided a generous donation towards funding project services, but also staffed the Project’s clinic to provide pro bono legal assistance with clearing traffic and criminal records. Their support helps veterans knock down the barriers to obtaining employment, housing, and financial freedom.
