From March 23-31, 2024, LACBA traveled to Taiwan, a beacon of freedom and innovation in Asia. LACBA’s impactful itinerary included visits with government agencies, civil society organizations, bar associations, and more.

In April 2024, the International Law Section hosted a Career Panel at USC Gould School of Law. Panelists included individuals from the Los Angeles Asylum Office; Schonbrun Seplow Harris Hofman and Zeldes, LLP; USC Dornsife’s Political and International Relations Department; and, Greenberg Traurig, LLP. The panel was moderated by then Visiting Assistant Clinical Professor of Law and Interim Director of the USC Gould School of Law International Human Rights Clinic, Henna Pithia.

Throughout 2024, the International Law Section had the privilege of meeting with various Consul Generals and Representatives in Los Angeles. For example, the International Law Section met with the Consul General of Mexico in September 2024 and Taiwanese delegates in August 2024. The International Law Section looks forward to continuing its tradition of building relationships with Consul Generals throughout Los Angeles and greater California.

In September 2024, the International Law Section hosted a group of young attorneys and law students in China. The meeting was held at the officers of Squire Pattons Bogg in Los Angeles and provided attendees with an overview of pro bono opportunities in Los Angeles. The attorneys and law students were led by Sha “Sam” Huang, who filed the first transgender labor discrimination case in the PRC and is currently a visiting scholar at Fordham in New York City.

In September 2024, the International Law Section hosted a tour of the Los Angeles Law Library. LLM students and practitioners viewed the Los Angeles Law Library’s robust international law repository.

In October 2024, Chair of the International Law Section, Michael Fern, led the way with a film screening for Invisible Nation at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. The film was also shown at UCLA and the 2024 VC Film Fest and highlights Taiwan’s evolving role in the world program.

The International Law Section partnered with various other LACBA sections to co-host the December 2024 Holiday Party in the Arts District in Los Angeles.

Meeting with the Consul General of Japan in Los Angeles

ABA Afghan Legal Professionals Scholarship & Mentoring Pilot Program

In partnership with the American Bar Association (ABA), LACBA’s International Law Section will host a virtual presentation focused on mentorship for Afghan Lawyers in the United States. Subnational Diplomacy with the U.S. State Department

The International Law Section looks forward to partnering with the U.S. State Department on a presentation focused on Subnational Diplomacy. In addition to talking about this important topic with our State Department colleagues, we look forward to sharing more about career pathways into the U.S. State Department. AIDA MINERO is an attorney and former Senior Diplomat who recently joined the ILS Section at LACBA. Her career combines extensive experience in both the public and private sectors, including international government affairs and legal expertise. As part of her diplomatic engagements, Ms. Minero served as Ambassador of El Salvador to Panama and Chile where she conducted diplomatic efforts and developed strategies to promote bilateral relations in every field. 

Following her diplomatic assignments, Ms. Minero was admitted to the California State Bar and is excited to join the legal community in Los Angeles. She looks forward to contributing with her experience to ILS’s activities and the international legal community.

Aida assists institutions and organizations in achieving their objectives by bringing innovative ideas and perspectives to develop projects and activities that advance their strategic goals. In her recent roles, her work has been primarily focused on identifying, creating, and facilitating opportunities to advance business, investment, and strategic partnerships.

Prior to joining the foreign service, Ms. Minero’s practice focused on corporate and banking law, and international business transactions, where she was also General Counsel at a national bank. She also worked as a Visiting Attorney at Swidler, Berlin, Shereff Friedman in Washington DC.

Aida is dual-licensed to practice law, she is admitted to practice in El Salvador and the United States. With studies in both civil and common law systems, she can navigate legal environments in both the US and Latin America, effectively bridging the two systems and assisting with legal matters involving both regions.

Aida holds a Law degree from the Universidad Dr. Jose Matias Delgado in El Salvador, and an LL.M. from Columbia University School of Law with a concentration in Corporate and Financial Law and International Business transactions. She is fluent in both English and Spanish, and speaks conversational German and Portuguese, further expanding the scope of her legal practice.
